Every day, millions worldwide watch short-form videos on TikTok and share their own clips. Some do it to be creative and sociable; others are seeking popularity. But many of the users are unaware that the videos they share on Tiktok through their personal mobile phones are available to anyone on the internet.
Thousands of people who participated in the recent Tiktok #sihlouettechallenge and many nude challenges on Tiktok were shocked to realise that the videos they assumed were private are now on public pornographic sites.
We were doing our monthly reputation management updates for clients when we picked up the video of one of our clients, who participated in the sihlouette challenge on the internet and on various pornographic sites. Pornographic Video brokers have been downloading the challenge videos and removing filters, thereby leaking the actually nude videos without filters.
We have since been on a link cleaning campaign to help our client remove her videos on the internet.
To check if your profile is public type the following into the browser http://tiktok.com/username (replace the username with your TikTok username).
If your videos are viewable, then your content is available to anyone, to avoid being in the same situation as our client, here is how to ensure your videos are kept private and not available to everyone on the internet.
When you make your account private, everyone that is already following you will still follow you, but new users who want to see your posts will have to make a request, at which point you can either approve or decline.
In just five quick steps, you can make your TikTok account private.
1. Open the TikTok app on your iPhone or Android.
2. Tap “Me” at the bottom-right corner of your screen.
3. Tap the ellipsis at the top-right corner of your screen.
4. Tap “Privacy and safety.”
5. Toggle the slider to the right of “Private account” to make your TikTok account private. When the slider turns green, you’ve made your account private.
